December 5’s Friday Fleurday

Although our outdoor flower season is essentially over – I have seen a few outliers but they will eventually disappear, too – I found this lovely collection of poinsettias in a greenhouse.

I don’t typically like poinsettias all that much, but this multitude looked particularly attractive.

Along with holly, they are certainly one of December’s signature flowers/plants and give the season a lot of flair.

Happy Friday.

  1. They look very festive. The only thing that bothers me about them is that they are poisonous, so you don’t want them around little kids or pets who might chew on any leaves that fall.

      1. I stopped buying them because of having pets, but friends brought us a beautiful white poinsettia a couple of years ago and I remember being very fussy about putting it in a place where no dropped leaf could be eaten by a puppy.

        1. Yes, I stopped buying them for the same reason, probably about 25+ years ago. When our Rudy passed on, I just didn’t ever start buying them again but now that we’re looking for another dog, I for sure won’t be.

    1. Thank you very much, Allan. We actually have wet snow falling right now which is supposed to turn to rain later today as the temperature increases. The cloud is basically down to the ground, too, so all the bright and cheery lights and plants are a good thing!

  2. Hi Lynette – I’ve always liked poinsettias but have never been successful keeping them alive after the holidays. I usually overwater them!

      1. That could be – also the pots they come in are so shallow with very little dirt. I think to make it work I would have to transfer it to a bigger pot – but that can be hard on the plants – I’m not very good with indoor plants 😉

        1. The ones now – as opposed to 20 years ago – are really only meant to last a short while, I think. They’re in forced growing conditions which exhausts them and then they collapse; at least, that’s my theory.

    1. Yes, they are. I stopped buying them years ago because we had small children and pets and then just never bought one again afterward since I don’t like them enough. Agreed – they do have great colours, especially when they’re all together in a bunch.
