August 22’s Friday Fleurday

In this hemisphere summer is starting its slow slide toward autumn. Although the temperatures are still high and lots of people are on holidays, the angle of the sun and the shorter days are highlighting the age of the season. I’m also starting to see it in the types of flowers that prefer this time of year.

Yellow coneflowers (with some barberry in the background that’s beginning to turn red) …

… and mountain hydrangeas are obvious examples …

… but so are these pretty pink roses; they definitely have a late season look about them.

Happy Friday.

        1. It would be for the coastal areas but this temperature (and into the 40s, too) is not unusual for the interior, particularly this valley. This region (the Okanagan Valley) is a “pocket desert” – sometimes referred to as the Okanagan Desert – and is the only one in Canada. We have very mild, somewhat dry winters with very hot summers. That’s why orchards and grape vines thrive here and there are many plant and animal species found nowhere else. Cheers.

          1. I did not know that. That is interesting. I have to visit British Columbia one day. Our late Leonberger Bronco was born in British Columbia, somewhere on the countryside east of Vancouver.

        1. Hahaha. 😊 For sure. I don’t handle high temperatures well any more (my internal temperature regulator has aged out or something!) so I never crave 30-ish highs. I do like sun though, right up until it’s too much and then I want rain!

  1. Very beautiful flowers!! We still have triple digits here but the next few days will see the highs drop into the 90s, summer may be slipping away here. Maybe…

    1. Thank you very much, John. We’re still in the mid-30s (mid 90s F) but I’ll be happy to see that drop off. The sun’s angle and the shorter days are sure showing that autumn is on the way, though.

    1. Yes, they’re very pretty and colourful. Our August bank holiday was earlier this month but it’s nevertheless busy as people try to enjoy the last few days before school and work start up again. We’re enjoying a quiet weekend at home, too. Cheers.

  2. Lovely pictures. It’s definitely feeling a bit like autumn. It’s not as humid anymore and the nights are getting cooler and longer. I actually quite enjoy this time of the year when autumn is approaching. I still get those back to school jitters around Labour Day even though I finished school many years ago. But my little one is starting day care in the beginning of September which is bringing back a lot of those feelings.

    1. It’s amazing how those emotions will stay with us long after the real trigger is completely gone. A reminder is all it takes. But yes, your little one starting day care would accentuate those feelings for sure. I can’t believe she’s already old enough to go! I agree that this period at the end of August/beginning of September is the best. Cooler nights but warm days and stable weather. It’s usually so great!
