Late Season Ducklings

I spotted this large brood of ducklings – nine in all – out learning about life with their mom.

I think this is either a late brood or a second brood. Ducks will sometimes “renest” if they lose the first nest or all of their hatchlings to a predator.

This may be the case with this brood or possibly the mother duck decided to raise a second family. That can frequently happen with ducks that don’t migrate since they don’t have to expend resources on migration; ours here stay through the winter.

Happy Saturday.

  1. Ducklings are so cute and less gangly than goslings. I think you are right about this being a late or second brood. Apparently crows also do this 2nd brood thing if they lose their chicks to predators. Ughhh. Happy Saturday Lynette. Allan

    1. They really are, especially with the little peepings they make. Goslings are definitely gangly! I think so, too, Allan. July is late for a brood of ducklings so I think this mom lost either the whole nest to a snake or maybe all her chicks after they had hatched. There are pike in the lake and they will eat ducklings. There’s always something trying to eat them, but that’s nature.

  2. At one point I had 23 ducks 😅 I love them… But I actually love geese more! They get a bad rap but if you get them as goslings and carry them around in your pocket, they have big personalities. 🥰

    1. I like geese too, in spite of their bad reputation. They definitely are characters and are such good parents, too. The mallard ducks seem to get on with everyone, though, even the quail who are so nervous. Thanks for commenting. 😊 Cheers.

    1. Thank you very much. 😊 I hope so too, Belinda. She has them in the little pond in the Japanese garden and that’s a well-protected, safe habitat for little ducklings. No pike and the gulls avoid it.

    1. Ducklings are very hard to resist. Every time I see them I have to stop for a bit to watch them. They are just so adorable and especially when they do their little peepings. I can understand why your daughter would like to have a little one or two.
