I saw this deer in our neighbour’s yard across the lane from our deck. Deer often visit his yard; there’s nothing much to eat there but they see it as a safe place for a nap.

Usually they arrive in twos, threes or fours, but this one was alone.

When she heard me talking to my husband she waggled those amazing ears and turned to look at me. She was completely unconcerned, just wondering why I needed to be noisy while she was trying to rest.
Happy Mother’s Day Sunday. 💛
Beuatiful photos. Happy Mother’s Day.

I think that one is probably a yearling, born last summer. Yes, those ears are quite something!

Anytime we were in Penticton, we always saw deer wandering about. They seem to have little fear of civilization. Happy Mothers’ Day Lynette. Allan

Thank you very much, Allan. Happy Mother’s Day to Patty. Penticton has a soft spot for all kinds of critters. Marmots and ducks, deer wandering wherever they like and people leaving out food for them. I’m not sure why the deer like to bed down in our neighbour’s yard but I have seen them there frequently. They’re certainly not bothered there. Cheers.

I have seen deer strolling up Main Street at 10:00 pm! They really aren’t much bothered with us humans here. I’ve frequently seen deer resting in our neighbour’s yard; they definitely feel safe there.

We live above COP and often see deer when we bike on Paskapoo Slopes, but they are very skittish and run away. We often see moose there too, who seem to be scared of bikes, but are aggressive to runners.

Moose can be very unpredictable; I remember an elder warning about them when I lived in NWT. They are especially unpredictable in the spring when mating season starts. It’s funny that they are scared of bikes but aggressive with runners! The deer in this area are definitely not skittish but I think it would probably be better for them to be more leery of humans.

Looks like a “town deer.” I can see its ribs. Still it’s not in as rough shape as our town deer are. Such gentle animals. I think they sometimes have a rough life near town.

I frequently see them among abandoned orchard trees eating the fallen fruit and also in town foraging in people’s gardens, too. They maybe do have a rough life in or near town but I guess feel safer here than with the wolves, bears and bobcats. Yes, they are very gentle and just very calmly stroll around looking for something to eat.

The outskirts of town are probably best for them. Right in town, there’s nothing to eat and maybe even no water, but while I agree about the predators in nature, the deer also have more to eat and are in better physical shape to avoid the predators. It’s a tough one. I know I’ve seen both sides of the situation. Sick and thirsty town deer, and healthy deer in nature with broken legs and still trying to survive. There’s good and bad about both habitats.

I agree, Anneli. The deer in town for the most part seem to be healthy and I know that a lot of people feed them vegetables and fruit, just as the marmots and ducks are fed. The city even feeds the ducks when it’s cold out! I have mixed feelings about that. In the long run the wildlife would probably be better off not being so comfortable and familiar with humans. It’s always a trade-off, isn’t it?

Definitely looks like it wants you to stop being noisy… “this is most irregular, you know” is clearly the expression 😂.

Deers are so beautiful. I like them as long as they stay out from my garden. One day I saw a deer swimming from an island to mainland. Water temperature is 7 degrees celsius!!!

They are very gentle animals but also very tough! I have seen deer in vegetable gardens and sometimes in orchards or among fruit trees but it’s also common here to leave food out for them, too. I don’t have a garden now but if I did I wouldn’t want the deer visiting! Cheers.
