Autumn Walk

Here, the autumnal signs were at first very slow and muted, but suddenly – seemingly overnight – the foliage colours and other signals arrived en masse. The wind began delivering a sharp edge and together with intermittently leaden skies, the sun started its fallish slant.

Autumn cogongrass.
As it ages, the maiden silvergrass turns white instead of red. Kind of like me.
Red and green blackgum tree.

I’m enjoying this cooler weather, though. It was a hot summer and up until a few days ago, we were still experiencing temperatures in the mid to high 20s (about 80 F). According to the prognosticators, we will probably be getting a few more of them, but this invigorating and lovely coolness will eventually take over.

Happy autumn. 🍂

    1. Well, if I could, I would have shipped them some of ours. We definitely had more than our share. “Atmospheric river” heat waves in the low 40s (about 107F), ugh. Weather – no one’s ever happy!

  1. Autumn has arrived Lynette. Here we are in a cool stretch around 12C, but up to 21 next Monday. Some rain showers keep it interesting, but still no frost. Hoping to get a few more walks and rides in. Enjoy the autumn. Allan

    1. Thanks, Allan. Our high today is 18 but we’re supposed to get low 20s for the weekend. It has been so nice to have the lower temperatures, especially in the evenings but no frost here, either. Fingers crossed you get stable weather for some more walks and rides. Cheers.

  2. Autumn is my favourite season, although this year is very different, if not awkward in southern Ontario.. after a very hot and humid summer, the trees are loosing their leaves way faster than normal. So, not much colourful foliage..

    1. Yes, that can happen. The trees are heat exhausted and just want to rest. We have some of that happening here, too. The leaves are just drying up and falling off. Most trees here are more heat resistant, however – we are classified as semi-arid desert – but there are lots of species that struggle more to live with our hot summers. This summer was hotter than most, though. The low 40s? Ugh. That’s too hot.

  3. It’s been warm here, too, Lynette. Not seeing much in the way of fall color either. Today it’s cooler, but it’s supposed to get warm again in the coming days. Weird season. I love the cooler days of fall and wish they’d get here already. I don’t want it to go from summer straight to winter.

Glad you’re continuing to enjoy nature.

    1. I looked at last year’s photos and we had some beautiful red maples by this time, but this year autumn has been really slow. We’re supposed to get warmer for the weekend as well, although today I saw people sitting on the beach when I went walking! It was a beautiful temperature though, so I can understand why. The cooler autumn days are so wonderful, aren’t they? Particularly after all this heat. A nice slow descent into winter would be lovely. Cheers, Lori.

  4. I’m not familiar with cogongrass which is pretty, pretty. Your other photos are great too. I especially like the blackgum tree that looks quintessentially autumnal.

    1. Thank you very much, Ally. We don’t have much change yet so my pickings weren’t great.

The cogongrass is confined to the Japanese garden as it’s an invasive with very undesirable characteristics (chokes out native species, dries easily and fuels fires). I have noted that the gardeners are quite careful with it but it’s out in the open so it can potentially spread.
