August Sampler

It’s September, and if you’re in the Northern Hemisphere, for many there are mixed emotions involved. Some like the arrival of cooler weather and the beautiful autumn colour changes, while others will soon be missing the summer sun. But in the meantime, a look back at August – a very warm August!

August 1 sunset over Okanagan Lake. It was 39C (102F) at 8:44 p.m.
August hydrangea.
I’m so hot! A marmot tries an early morning cool-off before the temperature goes back up!
Mid-August; evenings were becoming a bit more comfortable for strolls along the lake.
Pond lilies are always a delight to see.
Skaha Lake at the south end of town. Penticton is one of two cities in the world that sit between two lakes. The other is Interlaken, Switzerland.
The cool of an early morning walk.

Although I’m sad to see summer coming to a close, I’m happy that I won’t have to be as strategic about choosing a cooler time of day for walks or hikes. As I get older I find that I’m becoming less comfortable with high temperatures. I overheat quickly and take longer to cool off – I’m thinking of walking around with cold packs in my pockets – but that soon won’t be much of an issue. Here, September is a gorgeous month; it’s really the best of both worlds.

I hope your September is enjoyable.

  1. September can be one of the most pleasant months of the year in England, especially if we get a bit of an Indian summer. I think they’ve had a pretty rough and disappointing summer back home so I think everyone is hoping for a decent September.

    1. I’ve heard from other bloggers that the summer months in UK weren’t great. Lots of rain, it seems. September is our best month, too. A lot less hot (although we still have low 30s) and usually very stable, lovely weather, excellent for hiking and swimming. Fingers crossed the UK gets at least one good month before autumn takes hold!

    1. Thank you very much. 😊 The rocks had cooled off overnight and I think this poor little guy was trying to get a bit of relief there but it became very hot that day, 35 or so, so it wasn’t for long.

  2. A lovely selection. It must be wonderful to live in a town that sits between two lakes, lots of choices for walks. Is pond lily the name north Americans (and I include Canadians) use for what we would call waterlilies?

With those sort of temperatures I can see why you would welcome autumn.

    1. We really enjoy that aspect of the local geography. Skaha is the smaller lake at the southern end of Penticton and has a very different character. It’s slower, more relaxed, less crowded and the water warms up to a perfect swimming temperature.

I don’t know if Americans use the name pond lily but both names – water lily and pond lily – are used in Canada with pond lily the more common. I have heard Americans use the name white water lily but I think that may be a specific type native to the US south.

It’s normal for this valley to get hot but with climate change the mean temperature is climbing …

  3. A beautiful collection of August photos Lynette. September 1 was absolutely gorgeous here at 30C and today will be even warmer just before an evening shower. Nobody should be complaining about the summer weather this year, except those affected by wildfire. Looking forward to September. Happy Labour Day. Allan

    1. Happy Labour Day, Allan. My first Labour Day where I’m not part of the labour pool. 😊 Feels great. Yes, we still have low 30s as well. Agreed – no complaining except for the fires and my understanding is that we recently had enough rain to control many of them. September here is gorgeous, so I’m looking forward to it, too. Cheers.

    1. I agree! He looked so cranky and hot. It was a beautiful month but blisteringly hot, so I’m ready for a more temperate September. I’m not a fan of winter either, but after 7 winters in NWT, the ones here are pretty easy by comparison. I was pretty tired of -45 by the time I left!

        1. Wow! Here in the west we have had the two worst fire seasons on record, 2023 and 2024. We’re at the top of the emissions pile because of all the forest fire smoke. What’s most frustrating is the number of climate change deniers who feel they have to run for office, usually carrying a backpack of other looney nonsense with them as well. The US’s Trump seems to have unleashed all these whackjobs from whatever holes they were hiding in. Ugh.

          1. As humans, so many see us at war with nature on the environment, and we all know the first victim in war is the truth. Until most people accept that climate change is real and that we are the major cause, the truth will always be denied, unfortunately.

  4. Beautiful set of pictures. Nature really knows how to put on a good show, especially in August. I’m already missing the longer days. It gets dark so early now. I’m looking forward to the fall foliage as well though.

    1. We have a similar situation as we’re supposed to get 30-32C (86-90F) until about mid-month. It has cooled off some but we’re still having summer here, too. I’m looking forward to autumn as it has been so hot over the last 3-4 months.
