… has started growing again! M and I recently did a bit of a tour through one of the very dry, almost desert-like valleys just to the south of us where some very excellent Bordeaux-style blends and single varietals are produced. The Similkameen Valley has a couple of our favourite wineries.

We had a very enjoyable day. Have a good weekend.
The expansive view of the valley is stunning. Happy weekend Lynette!

Thank you very much, Tricia. 😊 That’s just a very small part of it as it’s quite large and home to many vineyards and fruit trees.

I am so glad life is coming back to wine country. I fear it will still be a tough year. Happy Saturday Lynette. Allan

It’s unfortunately going to be, Allan. We talked to a winemaker from one of our favourite wineries (she was more forthcoming when she learned we’re local) and it’s bad. They have to pull all their syrah and a number of other varietals that didn’t make it through the cold snap in January.
They had been hopeful of saving their plants with warm water until it dropped to -29C two nights in a row and then they knew they had lost a lot of them. It looks like the hardier hybrids have made it and depending on location, some others that they thought they might have lost. They’re changing the trellising and mulching methods for next winter and are hopeful this will be much more protective if there’s another cold snap next January. The 2024 production year will a sparse one, that’s for sure.

So sad for the producers who put all the money and effort into it.

It looks so pretty there! When are the grapes ready for harvest? 🍷

Hi Belinda, it depends on the type of grape and the weather conditions. Some are much earlier than others – grapes to be used for ice wine can be as late as November for instance – but September is generally when you will see harvesting occurring in the vineyards. Cheers. 🍷

Thanks, Ally. The area is classified as semi-arid desert, and spring showers through April and May make a big difference.
