After having been quite frozen and with only an ice-encrusted fountain to keep the water moving during last month’s cold snap, the fish pond in our Japanese Garden is back in good nick. Two weeks ago it looked like this:

There had been some significant thawing from the week before but I still couldn’t see any of the fish.
Then there was yesterday:

The fountain and pond were looking much warmer of course and I spotted some of the fish.

If you look to the mid-lower left you will see some fishy looking shapes; we saw about seven of them. They are in a state of quasi-dormancy during winter, but are very slowly swimming and do seem to have come through our nasty deep-freeze just fine.
Happy Monday.
So glad the fish survived the freeze (and the fountain too). Happy Monday Lynette. Allan

Thanks, Allan. Yes, I kept wondering about that fountain but it kept going and seems to be fine. The fish are moving rather slowly (cold water will definitely do that!) but don’t appear to be any the worse for wear.

What a difference in appearance. I’m glad the fish came through 😊

Agreed, quite a difference in appearance. Yes, I’m glad the fish came through as well. I kept checking on them and our resident duck flock, too.

fish and crocodiles have a sort of anti freezing ingredient in their blood.

Yes, I remember that from long-ago biology (I don’t want to say how long ago … 😉). I was concerned though that the little pond might have been frozen for too long for them to make it through.

Yes, these are koi with a couple of other species, as well. These koi are about 2-4 kg (5-10 lbs), and will probably keep growing!

Nice. Getting nicer here, too. I’ve a couple of windows open all weekend and today. Very unusual for February around here.

We had some mixed rain and snow today (it later became rain; much better than snow), so our sunny break was rather precious. Enjoy your good weather. 😊
