We were having lunch at a favourite restaurant overlooking the lake when we spied a reindeer.

In North America, reindeer are called caribou (unless they’re domesticated, in which case they‘re called reindeer – confused yet?), but they’re actually the same animal, domesticated or not.
The one above is actually a lovely little forest deer, but his appearance was very appropriate I thought, especially for December 23.
Do you like our December weather? It’s a fantastic break from all the rain!

Happy December 24.

I’d like weather like that for one day, just Christmas. Then back to normal Aussie sunshine.

This was our first bright day after a week of almost non-stop winter rain, so it was a lovely break, quite unusual for December. Season’s Greetings. 🎄

I would say he was definitely bringing you a Christmas greeting.

I think so too. He was certainly a lovely, healthy-looking deer.

I think the poor deer is looking for a way over the fence so he can dine too. Amazing weather in the West for sure, but we deperately need moisture here. Hardly a flake of sno on the ground in December does not bode well for the future. All I want for Christmas is snow. Happy Christmas Eve Lynette. Allan

Thank you, Allan.
Actually, he was on “our” side of the fence and seemed to find a good patch of something he started contentedly munching. The server was a bit perturbed to see him but then relaxed when she remembered that there’s no grapes or shoots for him to eat right now!
We have had a lot of rain over the last ten days, slow and steady though, exactly what has been needed. There’s also good snow in the mountains.
The lack of moisture in Alberta has been really concerning. Even NWT has been much warmer than usual. I used to fly out of Edmonton City Centre (when it was still there) and I don’t think I ever experienced a snowless December at that airport. Fingers crossed that you start getting snow or rain, Allan, or agreed, it doesn’t bode well for the future.

At first I thought you drove to Jasper for your lunch and not Kelowna! Merry Christmas, Maggie

Haha. 😁 Actually, we’re in Penticton, not Kelowna, but there’s good restaurants with views there too. 😉 Season’s Greetings. 🎄

Seems fitting to spot a forest deer that looks a lot like a reindeer for this time of the year. The only thing missing is the snow. Looks like we won’t be having a white Christmas either.

It was lovely to see this deer with his full antlers on December 23! Okanagan Valley doesn’t usually get much snow (last Christmas was very unusual); it’s far more likely to be rain or just a heavy frost. We’re supposed to get +3 and sun on December 25. Santa might need wheels on his sleigh!

I was thinking “caribou!”
Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas! 🎄Yes, he did look a bit like a caribou – same family, just much smaller.
