Week of Flowers – Day 5

Cathy at Words and Herbs is encouraging people to post flower pictures as a way of escaping, even only for a few moments, the winter doldrums.

Today’s contribution comes from last August when I found these cornflowers growing in one of the city’s flower beds.

I love this shade of blue – so pretty.

  2. I’ve always loved the cornflower ever since my Mum, an avid gardener, planted several in one colourful border. Unfortunate that such a lovely flower was hijacked by Hitler and the Nazi party as a political emblem.

    1. Despite being fairly well-educated about the Nazi party and its history, I missed that piece of information (I just looked it up). I see that it’s again associated with another dubious far-right Austrian political party. Agreed – what a shame that this lovely little flower has been hijacked by these people.

  8. A beautiful flower and colour Lynette. When I was in grade school in Winnipeg, our summer project was to plant a garden (3 veg and 3 flowers). One of the flowers was Bachelor’s Buttons, so your post brought back ancient memories. Happy Tuesday. Allan

      I forgot that name! My mother used to plant cornflowers (she was an amazing gardener) and also referred to them by that name, so you’ve stirred up an ancient memory for me, as well.

  13. I love blue flowers and grow as many as I can, although I haven’t had much success with that one. I suspect my garden beds are too dry.

    1. Cornflowers sure are pretty; that blue is so great. Cornflowers love moisture and full sun – that’s what I remember from my mother who was a great gardener and grew lots of them. Cheers.
