Someone stopped at the year-round duck community next to the creek to drop off some veggies and grain for them.

They were in duck dinner heaven. No scavenging for bugs tonight!

These ducks forage mostly on their own but people will supplement their diet with carrots, peas, cabbage, cooked pasta and quinoa, all of which are good nutritional choices for them. Feeding them bread or crackers really isn’t good for them as they apparently gain weight easily and this affects their ability to walk.
Happy Monday.
Looks like they’re at an annual duck dance 😂

Yes, they sure do. They were milling around looking for more, I think and not quite believing that the banquet was over!

I suspect that feeding them corn liquor would “affect their ability to walk” even more (and faster)! 😀

Hahaha. 🙂 Definitely. Their cute duck waddle would become a duck dumble!

Are these the ones that stay around all winter? Glad the ducks are being fed nutritional food. Happy Monday Lynette. Allan

Thank you, Allan.
Yes, this is our permanent flock. The city fed them last December during the unusual cold snap (it went down to -10 for about a week affecting grape vines) as they weren’t able to forage very well with the creek frozen over. There were lots of people leaving veggies though; everyone was a bit worried about them. I think they are unofficial city mascots really and get lots of care and attention.

My sis and I passed a soybean field out in Indiana–just harvested–and it was covered in ducks foraging the bits left behind. Looked much like this.

It’s amazing how they can literally cover an entire field cleaning up the bits. Nothing gets left behind. They sort of chat with each other while they’re eating, too. It’s very sociable.

So many ducks! I knew you weren’t supposed to give them crackers, but didn’t know about what to give them instead.

Yes, this is a fairly sizeable flock. They have stopped migrating as they are well fed and the winter is reasonably temperate here. They really have become unofficial city mascots. So cute and everyone likes them.

They really are. A few days ago I was sitting on a bench and was approached by a female who gave my shoe the gentlest little nudge (and then looked beseechingly at me, but I didn’t have food). They’re lovely.

I think that for the most part, they are. There are always going to be those who give them bread or crackers but usually that’s not the case. They do like to hang about food trucks though.

Food is always a great motivator to come together, whether you’re a human or a duck! Glad to hear that they’re being fed something healthy.

Agreed! Food brings everyone together! We have cooked some quinoa to take over on cold days as their little community isn’t far from us.
