The Penticton rose garden still looks lovely, despite the fact that we are now mid-way through October and much closer to Halloween than Labour Day. Below is a photo progression.
The photos show that it’s fading, but I think it’s in the gentlest, loveliest way: the beauty in ageing.

Thanks, Allan. I agree. While some rose bushes are fading, there are many others still growing with lots of new leaves and buds. I was surprised.

I think the plants are confused by the way the year has gone. I was just out cleaning up my old hosta an delphinium stalks and leaves for the fall and I see new active growth on my poppies. Also, my petunias continue to keep producing new blooms. Still no killing frost here.

Good point, Allan. I’m very surprised that you haven’t had frost yet but YK only recently got frost – very late for them – and they’re a lot further north. It can be hard on the plants to get confused like that.

Hi Stuart, it is. It’s a public garden that’s maintained by the city (along with the Japanese garden and all the parks and beaches, to say nothing of the many flower displays everywhere). It’s a big job and they really do excellent work. Other cities I’ve lived in have been more desultory. Cheers.

It definitely does. It’s slowly fading which is to be expected but considering the time of year is doing very well, I think. There are rose bushes that are still growing, surprisingly.

I keep getting new buds on my roses and hate to cut it back, but it’s getting cold now. I’m going to have to do it within the next few days. Pretty pictures.

I agree. This valley is a very temperate micro-climate so it normally doesn’t get very cold. January is the coldest month with an average temperature between about -2C and +5C (28-42F), but nevertheless I think these bushes should be cut back soon. I’m very interested in keeping track of how they are being handled. Thanks, Lori.

I visited yesterday and was surprised at how well it’s doing. It’s beautiful to sit there and admire the roses (and stop to smell them, too!).

Even though the roses are fading, it still looks beautiful and that there’s some life left. The lighting from the sun makes this place look enchanting.

It’s a very popular spot. People often stop to eat lunch or just read a book. Such a relaxing garden and of course, there’s always the gentle scent of roses. I’m surprised that it’s still doing this well but there’s also good maintenance.
