Autumn Blue Hour

As a pilot I have often seen the blue hour effect, something I’ve enjoyed experiencing over the years.

It happens when the sun is well below the horizon but its blue wavelengths are still visible.

In these shots there is some amplification from the cloud cover, but I like the effect. The interplay between light and dark is one of the amazing sights our spectacular natural world has to offer.

Happy Wednesday.

  1. I’ve often shot the moon, usually when full, during blue hour. It catches the warm light from the rising or setting sun which looks awesome against the deep blue. I’ve only flown once and sadly it did not coincide with blue hour.

    1. Blue hour shots are fascinating. I love how the light morphs and combines and is never the same from one second to the next. Seeing that interplay of light from the cockpit is pretty amazing, especially when we “rode” the sunset or sunrise by flying due east or west across the time zones.

  2. The time when sky and water seem as one and it is easy to get lost in that. Happy Wednesday Lynette. Are you officially retired yet or still counting down the days? Allan

    1. Hi Allan, thanks. I’m still counting. The last day is October 31. I’m still doing bits of paper work but really am 95% retired at this point. Looking forward to November 1 when it’s official. Nov 12 I have a retirement dinner with friends and family and then am off to Dominican Republic for a month. Cheers.
