Penticton is one of two cities in the world that is situated between two lakes. (The other is Interlaken, Switzerland.) We live in the north end near Okanagan Lake, but we used to live very near the other lake, Skaha, in the south.
A recent walk reminded me of the beauties of the smaller Skaha Lake; there was also some relief from smokey air as we had had some rain the night before.

That’s interesting about the city being between two lakes. We have a somewhat unique geological feature here. The Holyoke Mountain Range is one of the few in the world that runs east-west.

Thanks for the link. It is rather unusual for mountain ranges to run east-west, particularly in N America if I remember a year one Uni geology course correctly. Something about tectonic plate movements squishing N. America in an east-west movement and producing north-south mountains?
These lakes (and the land Penticton occupies) was apparently created by a massive ancient landslide after the last ice age. This area is still subject to landslides and there is a fault line running through the centre of the valley. I remember sitting in my living room and experiencing my first tremor (which felt more like a sway). I wondered whether the sofa was going to tip over. Very unsettling sensation.

I’ve only “experienced” one earthquake locally and that was centered far away in Canada (Chicoutimi, I think) and just the hint of a tremor shook the chair I was sitting in. The only other one was while visiting my brother in California and that was even less of an experience because it was a mild tremor and we were in a car so only the shock absorbers knew it was happening. 🙂

If noticeable, even the minor ones are very unsettling. Feels sort of creepy, actually. I wouldn’t want to experience a stronger one.

When you see it from the air, it looks like the 2 lakes were one some time in the past. It has been a long time since we were in Penticton, but I still have good memories of playing on the beaches with my kids. Happy Wednesday Lynette. Allan

My understanding is that Penticton sits on the result of an ancient landslide that occurred after the last ice age. Yes, it’s very apparent from the air – I remember noting that years ago.
Penticton is still a great place for family beach holidays. I remember those with my kids (and as a kid myself). Such fun. There are lots of upscale restaurants and of course the wineries but the core focus on families hasn’t changed. Cheers.
