Fantastic Roses

The variety and different shades and colours of roses is immense and beautiful, but I also find the green leaves very attractive, as well. Large, thick, deep green and luminous, they provide an indispensable and necessary anchor for those heavenly blooms that we humans like so much.

This particular bush has vibrant leaves as well as flowers.

The blooms are what trigger our emotions and stick in our imaginations, but without those lovely leaves (and stems and roots) we would never be able to enjoy the beauty that is the rose.

And not to be forgotten, I also want to salute our American neighbours, friends and family who are celebrating their national birthday today! Best wishes and many happy returns – a birthday rose for you. 🎉🇺🇸 🎂

  1. Why are we so fascinated with roses, I wonder. We spent hours looking at them when we were in Vancouver. You are right, the blooms must be surrounded by leaves for the perfect rose. Happy Tuesday Lynette.. Allan

    1. I guess it’s because they require a lot of care and attention (and many years ago, that was a costly enterprise) and also because they can be so dense and rich looking, even the small wild ones. And then there’s the scent which can be so concentrated and heady. Agreed – I can’t pass a rose bush (all the way from wild or in someone’s yard) without stopping to look, but yes, the leaves are an important part. Cheers.

    1. They definitely do grab us. I think because they are so rich and the scent is so intense together with the fact that they often require a lot more work than many flowers really appeals to our sense of the special.

  2. As you might guess, I am more a wildflower person. That said I enjoy my neighbor’s variety of roses. Really should take advantage and make images. But for now I’ll enjoy those that you are sharing. Thanks, Lynette!

    1. You are very welcome, Steve. Yes, I think you are much more of a wildflower person. I have to say that I like them all – the wild ones and the cultivated. I’m a bit of a magpie and will take pictures of anything that appeals!
