The book I have (Rainbows, Halos, and Glories by Robert Greenler) calls these “sun pillars” and says they are a result of reflection from the surfaces of flat-plate crystals of ice aligned in the atmosphere. Nice job noticing and taking the photo.

That’s something different. It’s as if the sun fell over the edge of the flat earth and is shining straight up.
