How’s this for a winterish picture?

The carp pond has partially frozen, confusing the ducks.

I was surprised to see the carp swimming around under the frozen surface. Someone had thrown rocks at the pond’s surface, trying to break the ice, but it’s frozen enough to hold. The fish look surreal under the rocky ice layer!
Wherever you are, I hope you’re staying warm. Happy Thursday.
Poor little ducks. Lovely photos as usual. We’re in the Caribbean at the moment, so it’s nice and warm here. We were glad to escape the cold weather in Portland. I hope you’re staying warm!

Thank you, Tricia. 😊 How great to have a break in the Caribbean! Enjoy the sun. We aren’t experiencing anything near the cold weather that has hit other parts of the continent. It’s seasonal here so we’re at about 1 or 2C (34-35.5F). Below freezing at night, though, but it is January. Cheers.

I quite love watching the ducks try to figure out how to land on or climb up on the ice in a pond. It is like those old Disney shorts that used to come out showing animal behaviour. We are going above freezing here today. Have a good Thursday. Allan

Thank you. I agree, Allan. They seem so confused by it; visually, it must seem very strange to them. Thanks for reminding me of those old Disney shorts. They were so much fun! Enjoy your day above zero. We are very, very overcast today but I sure enjoyed that string of sunny days.

The duck had better strap on its skates 😉. Nice set, Lynette!

Thank you very much, Belinda. 😊 That little one was so confused, it seemed! Yes, duckie little skates might help. 😊

How odd to see the fish swimming under the ice! How do they survive the frigid cold water? 🥶

Carp are extremely hardy and easily tolerate a frozen-over pond. They do go into dormancy in winter and only need to be able to keep moving very slowly. That said, I was surprised at seeing how much they were swimming under the ice! They should be largely dormant by now.

Funny to watch the fish under the ice.

It was! Especially carp as they should be dormant by now.

The fish, right below the ice is very odd, but makes a great picture. Maggie

I thought so, too, as they usually go dormant and just swim very slowly around the fountain which of course keeps the water open. So unusual for them.

I like confused ducks. They are goofy beings to begin with, but a baffled one is a delight to see.

I like your description, Ally. 😊 They certainly are goofy beings. These ducks were completely flummoxed by this hard substance that replaced their pond.

It definitely looks like winter! I couldn’t help but laugh about how someone tried to throw rocks on the frozen pond.

I was actually a bit annoyed at that because these rocks had been paving the edges of the pond. Someone had yanked them out of the dirt. It definitely is winterish! We even had a bit of snow although it didn’t last long. Cheers.
