Good-bye Summer; See You Later

Today is the last day of summer; autumn starts tomorrow – in this time zone – at 5:43 a.m. And although I noticed Hallowe’en chocolate for sale yesterday at the grocery store, I’m not about to be directed by marketers into either thinking about autumn or into making any kind of autumnal purchase, especially not when I want to enjoy this gorgeous weather.

I don’t think this looks like autumn. Do you?
Or this, either.

Right now we have beautiful days and cooler nights; a wonderful thing to be enjoyed as long as we can. Autumn will get here!

Happy Saturday.

    1. Thank you very much, Tricia. It’s definitely still summer here. I’ve seen a few dry leaves and a bit of red, but nothing really autumnal yet. Right now, it’s a lovely bridge between both seasons. Cheers.

    1. It’s funny how in 110 degree weather we see ads for inflatable snowman and other Christmas decorations 😀

We’ve been delighting in a gorgeous few days of highs in the 70s, a very welcome respite from an overly hot summer.

      1. Yes, we’re experiencing a respite from a very hot summer, as well. We were in the high 30s C (low 100s F) for very long stretches but are now enjoying 25-26 (77-78). Sleeping is so much better!

    1. Thank you very much, Liz. It’s actually fairly normal for the weather here to be great in September; it’s probably our best month with warmer days and cooler nights (no air conditioning required). But so many always want to rush us into autumn. This beautiful bridge month needs to be enjoyed before we start grumbling about it being too cold! 😉

  1. Agreed Lynette. What is it about marketing Hallowe’en candy before we have had time to fall into autumn. We saw this stuff in the stores right after Labour Day. We will enjoy our last day of summer. Happy Saturday. Allan

    1. Thanks, Allan. What I find really annoying is seeing the Hallowe’en skeletons tangled up with the Santa reindeer. The marketers are almost having a nervous collapse over the anticipated $. At least Penticton nailed down a policy of not putting up the city decorations until after Nov 11, which as I recall used to be the unwritten rule when I was a kid. Cheers.

  2. I’m entirely in agreement. We actually had a good downpour of unexpected but much needed rain this morning. My daughter is busy sewing another fabulous gown for a Halloween ball. It’s her favourite time of year but I hate it.

    1. Here, September is a glorious month, lovely warm days and cooler at night so sleeping becomes much better.

I am totally appalled at the cash grab that is now Hallowe’en (to be fair, lots of celebrations have become nothing more than cash grabs). It used to be such a sweet thing mostly for kids (with adult parties later in the evening) but now it’s just so over the top. Yes, many people love it but I never have. Even when I was a child I found it confusing to be knocking on strangers’ doors when the rest of the time I was supposed to avoid them!

    1. I couldn’t agree more, Linda, but of course we’ll have to face what I’m beginning to think of as just an end of year cash grab: Hallowe’en, Black Friday (even though that’s not a Canadian thing at all) and then Christmas. The important national observance of Remembrance Day gets totally lost in there.
