Ocean Thoughts

Haida Gwaii beaches …

… are fascinating places. Eagles that hunt in the ocean …

… for crabs and other delicacies …

… large cables of kelp that look like prehistoric creatures …

… massive stumps that have been pummelled by waves and then thrown up on shore …

… the birthplace of all life on earth. The salt is in our blood.

    1. Thank you, Allan. I do as well. I was amazed at how clean this beach is – only natural detritus like kelp. We didn’t see any plastic at all – so wonderful.

I’ve heard about Jasper, of course. There’s no way to win against 100 metre flames that cover 5 km in 30 mins. All I can say is that at least no one was hurt – that evacuation process was amazing; especially getting people out of the back country.

      1. It’s a long way – my sister and I walked to Tow Hill one time from about the Hiellen River (and back) and I thought my hip joint was going to be seized up forever. Didn’t realize how hard it was to walk on soft sand.

        1. Yes, walking in soft sand can be quite difficult and unpleasant especially if you have a joint that’s acting up. It’s hard to get a proper footing and the sand slides, too. We walked to Tow Hill as well, but the sand was quite damp and firm at that time of day.

    1. We did part of that drive but not right out to the tip. The sand started becoming a little softer than M was comfortable with, so we turned back. It was amazing, though. It definitely felt like the edge of the world!
