I found these rain-wet Icelandic azaleas growing in a garden in Reykjavik. I wasn’t expecting to see azaleas there, but in another pleasant Icelandic surprise, there they were!

I hope your Friday is in the pink!

Beautiful find Lynette. Iceland’s plant hardiness zones run from 3a to 8b. Ours is a solid 4 and I can not grow azaleas here. So sad. Happy Friday. Allan

With the warmer Atlantic current running up to their southern coast, they can get the temperate weather required to grow azaleas. We also saw rhododendrons about ready to bloom! Yes, Alberta’s continental climate doesn’t lend itself well to those types of bushes.

I had no idea azaleas could even grow in Iceland. What an unexpected surprise.

I didn’t either, but then I remembered that the warm Atlantic current passes right offshore from the southern coast of Iceland, which tends to keep the climate temperate in that area. Pretty amazing!
