I have never before seen a parakeet in the wild.

These are an amazing emerald green and blend so perfectly with the forests that they are almost indistinguishable.
They are presently under threat from people who trade in exotic birds and others who see them as pests. This pair (along with many others) are safe at the botanical garden outside Santo Domingo, however. They are very intelligent birds and are also incredible mimics.
Sweet!

Finding them in the trees would be like a Where’s Waldo experience Lynette. Allan

Hahaha. 🙂 That’s so true, Allan. The Where’s Waldo(s) of the bird world – a great comparison!

They are such a wonderful sight, especially to see them living normal lives. Cheers

I agree. One of the saddest things I saw was a Mexican trying to sell a budgie-type bird at a border crossing between two Mexican states. That bird would have had little food and no water, the way the guy was swinging the cage around, approaching each car, trying to get some money for it.

Oh Anneli, that’s heartbreaking. Animals or birds in distress because of humans is just so, so awful.

It was awful to see. This was probably about 20 years ago and I still see that image in my head because I was so upset to see it.

I’ve never seen a parakeet in the wild before either. They would blend in so well in the forest. And I had no idea that they are currently under threat.

They are pretty much the same colour as the forest – so amazing. And their interactions with each other are human-like, too.
I wasn’t aware of how nasty the trade in parrots, parakeets and budgies has become. Many are endangered or threatened because of it.
