Maple Glory

The sugar maple trees are stunning right now.

Walking under them is like being enveloped in a softly glowing, gentle dream.

I took these photos during Sunday’s (October 15) evening walk when it was wind-still and fresh, and the world felt like it was taking a breath.

Standing among them and looking up into their reaches conferred a strong sense of our smallness, of the sweep of life and our little bit within it.

Happy Tuesday.

    1. I’ve been watching this group every day and took the pictures when I thought they were reaching their zenith. I agree that seeing the big maples is a real treat. They don’t grow in the north much at all; it’s just too cold.

    1. Maybe yours are a different kind? Some varieties just turn yellow and the Norway maple for example turns a sort of purple. The ones pictured are sugar maples which turn anywhere from deep orange to red; the red maples turn fire engine red and so do the Japanese maples. I love all the diversity. This particular little grove is so gorgeous at the moment. Cheers.

  1. Gorgeous. I like to take pictures where it looks like I’m surrounded by the golden and red colors. I hope to do so soon. And to think I missed out on such beauty for two and a half decades in Florida.

  2. sighhhh! and it’s not just the sight of them, or the distinctive sharp odour as they mature… it’s also the sound of your boots scuffing through the fallen leaves below…

    1. Oh yes, those crunchy autumn leaves! I used to love that when I was a kid. Not much chance of that now because we have been getting quite a few showers and everything is damp (a very good thing given how Penticton barely scraped through the drought). I’m really enjoying the autumn colours and experience, something I haven’t had in a few years.
