Some of our national symbol maple trees are beginning their autumn colour-change ritual.

Many of the leaves are still green but others have begun their metamorphosis.

I love how the interior veins of the leaves turn red first, followed by the rest of the leaf as it becomes engulfed in colour before losing its tenacious grip on the twig and drifting to the ground.

I found this lovely example on the ground and decided to bring it home where it posed on my kitchen counter for a close-up.
Happy Saturday. π

Yes, the red maple leaf is our most popular and distinctive national symbol and is on our flag as well. Cheers. π

Love the maple tree. Sadly, while we do have some maples in the area, they are not prominent. The leaves on my Amur Maple in the front yard are now mostly on the ground and in the compost. Happy Saturday Lynette. Allan

As I recall, there were some maples in Medicine Hat but they had to be babied in order to get them going. And of course the September winds blowing through would strip the trees anyway! Still, maple trees are so iconic and majestic. I love the shape of them. Cheers.

I love the variation in colour. Some of the maple tree leaves are turning a very deep purple while others are bright red. Itβs so great to see this. π

They sure do. The last photo is of a leaf from a Japanese maple; as you can see they also turn an amazing red. We have Norway maples here as well that turn a dark purple or maroon. Iβm enjoying watching the different colours that are developing. Cheers.
