Autumn

There are many lovely symbols and rituals associated with autumn, but all of them are bittersweet, implying as they do the death of the season and the impending colder months.

Big bins of honey crisp apples, cool and crunchy; the last of summer in their sweetness.

Restless swathes of leaves, swirling and settling, settling and swirling.

Green with yellow highlights becomes a lovely and familiar sight.

Happy Friday; happy Thanksgiving weekend. 🦃

      1. Here it is Columbus Day weekend. We celebrate the third discovery of America instead of the first two. In a few places the name has changed to Indigenous Peoples Day as they were the first.

        1. Yes, I remember that (I lived in Arizona for a year when I was in flight training). I don’t know what you mean by the “third discovery”
though. We have two First Nations’ days; one in June and another in September. Many years ago, Thanksgiving used to be in November, but it was moved so as not to conflict with Remembrance Day on Nov 11. Happy Columbus Day. 🙂

          1. The Natives were the first crossing the land bridge from Asia to our continent. Leif Ericson is believed to have been the first European to “discover” the continent and then Columbus. So three discoveries.

          2. Okay, got it. Yes, I remember about good old Lief. We’re not taught in school that the Americas were “discovered” as they were already inhabited (many years ago kids were taught “discovery” but not now). Thanks for explaining.

          3. I thought that it might not because it wasn’t highlihgted for some reason. The title is “Wilderness at Dawn” by Ted Morgan. I’m attaching the link unreduced and it’s long so you’ll see why I tried to shorten it. 🙂

    1. Thank you very much. Most of our deciduous trees are still green; I figure we have about another week or so before peak colours arrive, but the weather is so great right now. I saw people swimming in the lake yesterday! Happy Thanksgiving. 🎃

  1. We have been blessed with amazing weather in Eastern Ontario, in the past couple of weeks, and the maple trees were are their best. It was the sweet time of the autumn, before the bitter part to come LOL
Happy Friday to you as well!

  2. I love the colours and the crunch of leaves – alas fall is such a short season in the prairies so it’s wise to enjoy it while it’s there. Happy Thanksgiving. Bernie

          1. We had a tiny bit but really need it to wait until everyone has harvest off. If you lived on the prairies for long, you will remember how life revolves around farming

          2. Oh yes, I remember (I lived in Medicine Hat for 20 years). The rain needed to arrive at an optimal time. Here though, rain wouldn’t hurt as it’s been so dry and very hot.
