Stone Circle 2

Stone Circle 2 with rainbow This is another isolated stone circle that we found driving backcountry roads in southwest England (back in August 1999).…

Stone Circle 2

A stone circle is highlighted by a gorgeous rainbow skyscape from Allan J Jones. He has many beautiful nature photos on his blog, so I hope you stop by to see more.

  1. So very intriguing. Oddly, in my Neanderthal research scientists found a circle of stalagmites (cut down and moved–2 tons of them) deep in a cave from 150,000 years ago.

What’s with the meaning of circles???

    1. I remember reading about that discovery – very interesting.

Circles tend to have a rather universal meaning: the rotational movement of all life, the seasons, the life cycle, etc; and circles and spheres are also the strongest structural shapes. For example, people living in earthquake-prone areas are safer in dome-shaped buildings.

Ancient peoples were probably trying to figure out the timeless question of their reason for being and linked that to the cyclical nature of life which then probably became a sort of religion or type of life philosophy that was represented by the stone circles. That’s my little take on it, anyway. Cheers. 🙂

    1. Research indicates that they may be related but actually pre-date Stonehenge and other UK standing stone sites. Pre-Celtic, I think. Agreed; it’s interesting to think about what these ancient peoples found important about the stones and their alignment.
