Northern Mockingbird

The northern mockingbird is slowly making its way ever further north; in the past its most northerly range was southeastern Canada, but they are becoming very commonly seen in southern British Columbia as well.

They are very plain-looking birds but their vocal range and penchant for mimicry is prodigious. When I lived in Arizona I saw them frequently, so I was delighted to spot one again here in Canada and hear its gorgeous song.

Happy Saturday.

    1. Very true. I remember my first encounter with one when I was living in Arizona. I kept hearing what sounded like a cat in the most terrible distress. I eventually realised that it was a mockingbird perched in a tree outside my deck. That particular bird had a whole repertoire of noises such as squeaky wheels and very high pitched whistles. And the real singing was divine!

    1. I’ve only recently heard of them in BC, but they have apparently been coming up this way for a few years now. I wouldn’t have recognized this one either except that I knew them from my time in Arizona. Cheers.
