The official flower of the Northwest Territories is the mountain avens. It’s a member of the rose family, and even in winter, its leaves stay green.

A tough, lovely little flower!
Happy Friday.

I agree. It’s amazing that its leaves stay green even when it’s -40 outside!

I hadn’t seen them before either until this year. I came across a whole field of them; only a few of them were open. I had to look them up!

I agree. Keeping your leaves green throughout the winter is no small feat!

Yes, especially when it’s -40C (-40F)! I didn’t know that about these plants until recently.

I never would have guessed this tiny flower could be so tough by just looking at it. But then again, it has to be if it can survive and thrive so far up north.

I am constantly amazed by the adaptations that can be found here. I didn’t know until lately that this plant stays green all winter, even through -40!
