Swallowtail Visit

A very large, lovely swallowtail butterfly visited my deck to investigate my hanging plants.

I initially thought it was a hummingbird, but when I went out to investigate, saw that it was instead a pretty butterfly.

It danced unpredictably and undecidedly from plant to plant for a bit as I scrambled awkwardly with my cell phone camera to get a picture or two.

Then our charming guest fluttered delicately away, off to do other butterfly things, while the rooted human still thrilled to the moment.

Happy Thursday.

  1. 🙂 You have managed to capture that butterfly at a wonderful angle.

Do enjoy the rest of your day, Lynette.

    1. Thank you very much, Renard.

The hanging flower pots are about 15 cm above my head, so I had to get creative with the angle. I feel lucky to get these shots since I was using my cell camera and also trying to get them off before the butterfly left. Cheers.

  2. Very cool. From that angle that you took those pictures, it looks like the butterfly is the size of a kite or a hang glider! Beautiful shots.

    1. Thank you, Lori. 🙂 This was a big butterfly! When I first glimpsed it I thought it was a hummingbird. I realize they’re small, but usually much bigger than most butterflies. I’m happy I got these shots as I was all scrambly trying to get them.

  3. well done! I’ve never seen a real live Swallowtail, so thanks for this one — to think how we used to take butterflies so casually for granted (like fireflies…), but now cannot

    1. Thank you very much. 🙂

You’re very welcome, Penny. I have seen quite a few swallowtails so far this summer but I agree, nothing like the numbers I used to see (and yes, take for granted) when I was a young sprout. I haven’t seen a firefly in a few years now.

  4. Can’t say that I have seen many pictures of a wild swallowtail from below. Some folks make shots of captured butterflies but in the wild from this angle is unusual, I think. Nice shots and a nice visit for you, Lynette.

    1. Thank you very much, Steve. This swallowtail was interested in the flowers in my hanging pots which are a good 15 cm (6 inches) above my head. It was challenging to get a good angle on the pictures (there was a lot of glare) and given that I was scrambling with my cell phone camera, I was lucky to get these. Cheers.
