Dear Americans …

I’m sorry to post this, but if you haven’t heard it yet, please listen and then pass it on. This morning, Prime Minister Trudeau directly addressed the American people and Mr. Trump regarding the imposition of tariffs. Here is the short version:

Here is the complete version.

This trade war will gravely and hugely affect both Americans and Canadians alike. No one will win.

    1. Jude, I am flummoxed. I think that partially it’s because he wants to force us into becoming a U.S. colony, partially it’s because he’s jealous of Justin Trudeau (younger, better looking, charming, erudite, etc, etc.) and lastly, I think that as a sociopathic narcissist, he likes scaring people and breaking things. He’s completely unstable. DT’s treatment of Ukraine, Canada and Mexico should stand as stark emblems of what’s coming for the rest of the world.

  1. At long last JT sounds like a leader. He states the obvious and I agree that there is no point in trying to figure this whole thing out, other than it is an act of war and the ultimate goal is humiliation and then assimilation. Jumping through hoops to please #47 is just icing on the cake for him. While it is DT that is bringing the pain, we need to take steps to become more united and more self sufficient. Do not travel to America, do not shop America, do not shop or watch Amazon/Costco/Wal-Mart. As DT says, we have nothing he wants, so lets give him that much. We need new customers and new alliances, as this is likely not just a trial separation. 🍁🍁🍁

    1. I agree! M and I remarked this morning that he’s been doing so much better in these closing months of his tenure than he ever did in his prime. His approval ratings have even improved.

I agree with everything you say here. Much more self-sufficiency. Avoid American products, travel, Costco, Walmart-Mart and Amazon. It has to be done. I think we need to talk to the EU about joining the Schengen Area, as well. Given the situation with Ukraine they would likely be receptive so now is the time. Agreed – even if we are able to fence-mend, our relationship with the U.S. may never recover from this, so it’s important that we develop other partnerships that we can trust. Trump is unstable and completely untrustworthy.

  2. All of us on this continent are Americans, not just those of us in the United (HA!!) States! Too bad the Orange Idiot doesn’t recognize that. I believe he would find Canada, and Canadians, very hard to digest if he tried to eat your country. On the other hand, if we could exile him to Nunavut, or maybe Quebec where he wouldn’t understand the language, I would not be upset. I am heartsick at how he is treating anyone not bowing down low enough before him. Heartsick at the closing of our national parks. Heartsick at the loss of life where we have supported grave humanitarian needs, until now. And now he wants us (and our pension plans, and the Federal government) to invest in crypto?!?

    1. Trump is unstable which is not surprising given that he’s a sociopathic narcissist. He wants to hurt, destroy, humiliate and control. We feel for you too and have watched with utter dismay as your country is being essentially dismantled. Crypto – ugh. Along with everything else the man is a moron.

Long ago, the Inuit used to exile community members who were dangerous, lazy or uncooperative. They were supplied with everything they would need to survive and then kicked out.

We would gladly help out if you can get him across the border in the trunk of a car (that shouldn’t pose a problem since our border is apparently so porous). Then we’ll stick him on an Arctic boat and drop him off at Churchill (where all the polar bears are). 😉

      Good luck to us all.

  3. I thought Trudeau did very well today, and as you said, he has for the past month. My only solace in all of this is that the entire world is beginning to understand how utterly deranged Trump is. I hope all of your followers watch this. Maggie

    1. Yes, Trudeau has been doing much better (I’m still happy that he’s going, though). I agree that between us, Mexico and Ukraine, the world is starting to wake up to yes, how utterly deranged he is. So dangerous and unstable. There’s now propaganda going around that we started the trade war; I’m sure this has been industriously circulated by his enablers.

    1. You’re very welcome, Harrie. We’re an early warning of danger; a lesson to be learned. Europe needs to pay attention because Trump is turning on allies and cozying up with dictators. That tells me that he wants to be one himself, so more unhinged mental garbage is going to continue spewing from this moron and his enablers and eventually it will be pointed at your part of the world. Today he said that “one way or another, we’re getting Greenland.”

And yes, the clothes? Yikes. I understand that Zelenskyy is trying to mend the situation with Trump, but any agreement he makes with that fascist won’t be worth the paper it’s written on.

  4. Oh yes. We heard. Trump is always looking for capitalistically beneficial business deals. If he carries through on his tariffs with Canada and Mexico it will result in capitol loss for the USA across all sectors which won’t work for his saavy business man mostly false identity. I suspect tomorrow, there will be a compromise. I hope so. Because in the end, if he bullies the world, we here in America all lose. Cheers to Canada, Mexico, Greenland and The Panama Canal. It is so ludicrous. But with Putin’s help he could achieve some of such anachronistic imperialist reaches. Do you think he is a Manchurian president?

    1. It’s very hard to say if there will be any sort of rollback tomorrow since it was Lutnick who made that announcement and he has been wrong before. Trump also seemed to be doubling down on tariffs during his speech today. The fact is that no one wins during a trade war although Trump seems stubbornly attached to the idea. They trigger recessions (in this case, for the U.S., Canada and Mexico) and major inflation. Unfortunately I think that Trump is turning on his allies and cozying up to dictators because he wants to be one himself and a lot of this are his attempts to show off to Putin, so yes, I would say he’s a Manchurian.

      Good luck to us all.

  5. As an American, I agree with every word used to describe Trump. Many also apply to his cabinet and staff. I understand why you are not buying US goods and servicez. I just hope that people don’t tarnish all US citizens with the Trump brush. I know people who are canceling international travel because they are wary of how they will be treated. And I must admit I am leary about a tour I have in the fall to Latvia, Lithuania abd Estonia because of the proximity to Russia.

    1. Thanks for stopping and commenting, Marie. Yes, I think many of Trump’s enablers are as unhinged as he is. Many of his cabinet, staff and the people who go nuts at his rallies are cultists, absolutely brainwashed.

We unfortunately have to do what we have to do. As a country, we started boycotting a month ago and the effects are beginning to be felt. The addition of today’s tariffs will also cause your prices for many things, including gas, to go up; neither Americans or Canadians will win this. Trade wars are equally devastating for everyone involved. We very much know and understand that not all Americans are Trumpists and that many of you are embarrassed and shocked by his behaviour.

Good luck to us all as we navigate this nasty (and very unnecessary) situation.

  6. Well done, Lynette. You perform an important service, curating and sharing just a few, but important, messages about what is going on right now. I look at that image of DT, so typical of the face he puts to the world, and think… “That scowl! That’s the Benito Mussolini scowl!”

    1. Thank you, Penny. Much appreciated. As you know y here’s a lot of info out there so I try to choose what looks to me as particularly salient. There’s a blogger (I unfortunately can’t remember his name) who refers to DT as the “Mango Mussolini.” Very apt.

  7. I haven’t always supported Justin Trudeau and the decisions he’s made, but he 100% has my support now. I’m impressed with how he’s standing up for Canada and Canadians and trying to weather this storm. I just hope that when an election is called, our new federal leader can continue the fight. And for now (and always) I’ll happily do my part and buy locally and support my fellow Canadians.

    1. I haven’t always supported him either and in the last couple of years I have found him to be really lacking, but agreed, he seems to have found his footing for us. I think he’s done better in the last couple of months than during much of his earlier tenure.
I am also concerned about the election. Poilievre really worries me as there’s a lot of Trump support in the grassroots of that party and it wouldn’t surprise me if he sold us out. Fingers crossed we get somebody who’s going to be capable of handling all this. I’m doing my bit also by avoiding as much as possible all American products and services. What a mess. Ugh.

      1. PP worries me as well and I don’t have much hope that he’ll put Canada’s best interests first. I’m happy to see that his lead is slipping away in the polls, but the conservatives are still heavily favoured to win if an election is called today.

    1. You’re welcome, Adele. When DT was elected we knew it was going to be four rough years of issues with him but I don’t think anyone was expecting this. Our foreign minister went on public record yesterday saying that our government is constantly dealing with his “psychodrama” and she’s right. Another one went on record saying that he needs a psychiatrist. Also right. In the U.S, a sociopathic narcissist has the nuclear launch codes and is cozying up to another one in Russia. Yup, a few weeks ago this would have been a bad novel.
