This isn’t a political blog, but sometimes I feel a profound obligation to use my voice, small as it is. I’ve posted about kindness many times here, …
Vote for Kindness
I am Canadian living in Canada and therefore don’t have a stake in the U.S. election nor do I blog about politics, but this post seriously resonated with me. Please click the link above to read the entire piece.
In our present Parliament we have an opposition – I hesitate to use the word “leader” since he’s nothing of the sort – “head” who has been employing and inciting harassment, intimidation, invective, personal attacks and name-calling as a method of trying to get ahead.
Watching a so-called “debate” in Parliament has become an exercise in tolerating unbelievably juvenile behaviour; a class of 12-year-olds is more mature. As important national issues are belittled, ignored and passed over, the crude, infantile and noxious squabbling continues unabated.
Regardless of your political stripe, this is not something we should accept or tolerate in this country. We in fact have a long history of NOT tolerating it. Kindness and respect are basic behaviours that we should require of all our politicians, no matter where they’re from, who they represent or what their platforms are. We hold the power to ensure that they do, and maybe it’s time for us to start enforcing it.
Food for thought.
Poilievre leans to the south. Meaning, he is more a more mild version of a Trumper than a Canadian.
He supported that Freedom Convoy.
Todays Conservatives are not like your Grandfathers Conservatives.

I like the way you put that, Wayne. I agree. I think he will support anything that he thinks will get him into the PM office. There’s no platform except “elect me” and he’s encouraging those batty types into bolder and more dangerous behaviours. Definitely – today’s Tories aren’t my grandfather’s!

Feeling sorry for you Canadians. You got it as bad as we do down here in the US! 🙄

Soul destroying, isn’t it. I can take virtually anything apart from dishonesty and hypocrisy. Politicians of the modern day are experts in both.

It sure is. This twit has no leadership qualities at all except a talent for talking complete BS and encouraging his batty fringe supporters into evermore dangerous behaviours. But yes, they’re to some degree all like that. Soul destroying is right.

Well said Lynette. Can we please just have someone who wants to rule our country for the benefit of the country and its people not themselves. I fear what will happen here (Canada) if Poilievre is elected. I think I’ll keep the photo bomber if that’s the choice. And our Alberta ‘leader’ is worse than Poilievre. She wants to put in rules so we don’t have to follow the rules, a covid fight left-over. Maggie

Thank you, Maggie. I agree. Is that too much to ask or are we foolish to even think it’s possible? I am also very worried about Poilievre and especially how he will cater to his batty supporters if he’s elected. M and I have talked about how we should vote. Ugh. It will be a hold-your-nose moment for sure! I’ve been reading about your “leader” and her ridiculous rules.
We have a provincial election in October and it’s neck and neck between the Tory tinfoil hat guy (he literally has someone running who thinks Covid is caused by cell towers) and the NDP. The Liberals are running as independents because their leader folded the party to support the Tories. It’s everyone for themselves!

I have read about your tinfoil hat wearing guy. Reminded me of Better Calll Saul! Not sure if I should put a laughing or crying emoji.

You said it, Maggie. I’m not sure either. I can’t believe that these are our choices. 😳

Yes. It is what I am sick of here in the UK when they are in Parliament. They waste their time not doing their job because they are slandering one another or just being bullies etc at one another instead if getting on with the task in hand. And when they do, it seems to the the vulnerable they target.
And OMG, I hope none of these think of bringing in any law to control a woman’s body and prevent her from having an abortion.

Agreed, Liz. Really they’re wasting our time and our money with their big mouths. They only care about control, not about the people they’re supposed to serve and the national issues they’re hired to deal with.
We thankfully haven’t seen anything here about devolving abortion rights but I know it’s an issue in the U.S.

I am glad nothing has been changed there like the U.S. had. It’s just so wrong. No one has a right over our bodies than ourselves. I hope the UK never go there.
Yes. They seem to know how to waste money just by their big mouths. I totally agree with everything you say.

I am, too, Liz. We own our bodies, full stop.

I’ve shared your post to my Facebook page, Lynette. And the original post to BlueSkySocial and Threads. I think this needs to be spread far and wide.

Thank you very much, Stuart. I agree that this message needs to be spread far and wide. The farther the better.

It’s a shame what politics and politicians have become. Instead of squabbling, finger pointing and name-calling, can we not just focus on the issues? We seem to have no shortage of them!

I couldn’t agree more, Linda. I am so tired of hearing the name-calling, especially. It really has become about getting elected and staying there. The issues are just tools to be used to climb into Parliament. I agree; we have a lot of them and it’s criminal how they’re being ignored.

Agree. It is time to use a performance review for politicians rather than wait 4 years to vote them out….if we can. They always forget who their boss is and if we displayed such churlish behaviour in our jobs, we would not be employed for long. And don’t even get me started on the idiots in charge of Alberta. Have a good Friday. Allan

Thanks, Allan. I love the idea of having performance reviews for these people! Of course, that’s what an election is for but the upcoming federal one is going to be a mess of meaningless slogans and catchphrases. A common sense government? More likely nothing but common nonsense. Agreed, Allan. If we behaved like that at work we would be out the door in a heartbeat.
We have bats in the belfry here, too. A provincial election next month and the Tory leader (who’s tied with the NDP leader for premier) is a climate change denier with at least one person running for his party who believes that cell towers cause covid. Ugh.

I’m so sorry that Canada is also going through this kind of political nightmare. Thank you for sharing my post and keep spreading kindness. It matters. Hugs.

Thank YOU very much for writing and posting your piece. Many of us here are very concerned about a particular individual who is only interested in self-aggrandizement. Kindness does matter. Life would be so much better with more of it.

We vote in our politicians to represent us and lead, there’s little evidence of either. I gave up watching Question Period a long time ago, it was plain embarrassing. I would like to vote for kindness and intelligence!

When I look at the choices, I always despairingly ask myself, is there no one better than this row of horses asses? Ugh. I agree totally, Belinda. Question Period is such an embarrassment. I would say that it’s a giant play pen but that would be an insult to toddlers.

I had no idea Canadians are dealing with the same ignorant, self-adsorbed, juvenile creep as we are in the states. We all learned in kindergarten that lying, cheating and name-calling are wrong; so why do so many tolerant it in our elected officials? I’m completely appalled and ashamed that so many in the states actually support them, and the one who started it all. As expats, we received our ballots early, and we were proud to vote for Harris.

Yes, we unfortunately have one of those types here. He’s often referred to as “Trump lite.” He’s copied a lot of Trump’s rhetoric and behaviours and is appealing to the batty fringe.
I am also appalled that this mouthy twit is ahead in the polls and people would seriously consider this quack as a possible PM. Lots of us are very worried. The world seems to be dealing with a surge in these types. We supposed to have another year before the election and I hope more people start to realise what a self-centred jackass this guy is.
From up here, Harris seems like a good choice. We kind of feel a bit of a connection to her since she spent her high school years in Montréal and graduated from Westmount High School.

Yes, these types of extreme politicians seem to be popping up, and even winning elections; it’s frightening. I didn’t know that about Harris. There’s a history professor in the states who has accurately predicted the outcome of the last 10 elections and he is predicting that Harris will win. I sure hope he’s right. Here’s a link if you’re interested. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allan_Lichtman

Thanks for the link, Tricia. Much appreciated. I’ve heard of him before. His analyses are fascinating. I wish he could analyze our politics, too, although I might not like the answer! His prediction that Harris will win must feel relieving.
