This amazing photo was taken by Vancouver photographer Martin Gregus in preparation for his portfolio submission to the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition.

Gregus won the “rising star” portion of the competition for young photographers aged 18-26; he spent an entire summer using a drone to photograph the bears from a distance so that he wouldn’t interfere with them. Given how endangered and precious the polar bears are, his non-intrusive photos are very important.

The best wildlife photographers catch the humanity in animals. I so love that (because I know it’s there).
This photograph certainly accomplishes that sense. It’s very touching.
Aww that’s so cute and touching…
Yes, to see such a large aggressive animal in such a tender moment is very poignant.
Smart to use a drone instead of walking over to check out the bear.
Hahaha. 🙂 That’s for sure! In his interview with CTV h described having to take a safety rifle along even to go to the bathroom. However, I have seen some very silly people walking right up to black or brown bears …
Yes! Some people think that just because bears seem slow and docile, they are tame and friendly to people.
Agreed. Of course, they have often been presented in literature and on tv as cuddly and sweet, and they’re absolutely not.
Surprise!!!!!
🙂
Polar bears are pretty magnificent animals. I bet the photographer has some other pretty incredible pictures of mama and her cubs given that he spent a whole summer with them.
Oh yes, he does. If you click the link there are some other amazing photos attached to the article and a video, too. The captures are so great.
