A Winter Reprieve

On a recent -40C morning, I was impressed by the blanketed quiet and ice fog-dominated atmosphere. The only sound was the crackling of my clothing and bag as they became deep-freeze cold. It was dark as I walked to work, but later as the sun began to rise, it looked like this:

Visibility wasn’t great until the day started lightening and it became a little warmer. It was one of those mornings that produced some rather heavily frost-encrusted eyelashes. When I came inside, I briefly held them with my fingers to melt the ice.

The ice fog disappears.

Hiding under all that fog was an intensely blue sky and the whitest white snow, almost blue itself. It turned into a very beautiful day with almost blindingly bright sun, even though it was incredibly cold outside.

It may be cold, but these vistas melt me. 🙂

      It is cold, no question, but you get used to frosty eyelashes. 🙂 We humans are masters of adaptation. 🙂
      Over the last couple of days it has warmed up to about -12°C. After that extreme cold it really feels warm! 🙂

    1. It’s only about 7 to 8 minutes but you do have to dress warmly anyway. At -40 that’s long enough to cause frostbite, especially if there’s a little wind. But luckily we don’t get much wind here, even though we’re on the edge of the world’s 10th largest lake.

      Haha. 🙂 yes, it is cold, but we’re north of 60° N latitude, so it’s to be expected. 🙂

  5. It seems when the sky is so crystal-blue clear, the temps drop even colder. No clouds to trap in any remaining heat their might’ve been. I have not experienced icicle-eyelashes. LOL Hope I never do. I just love how pretty the white, virgin snow looks against the blue backdrop sky. I took a picture of that last week, but we have lots of houses in the way. Your landscape is breathtaking there.

    1. That’s very true. I think that since we’re closer to the roof of the world the atmosphere is compacted somehow (that’s completely non-scientific, just my romanticised thoughts on the matter 🙂 ).

      Frozen eyelashes remind me to be cautious about how cold it is outside. 🙂

      I love that contrast too. It’s so pretty and pristine looking. Yes, the landscape is beautiful – I have a great subject to work with. 🙂
